A spokesperson from T-Mobile Us Inc (NYSE:PCS) said that downgrading is a far more accurate word to describe the slowing down of Youtube, LLC’s videos instead of the word throttle as defined by the most popular video platform. Both the companies have been involved in a verbal war ever since the Google-owned company has accused the cell carrier of slowing down its videos. Ever since T-Mobile launched its new app Binge On Video initiative in November 2015, the two companies have come to loggerheads.
YouTube never participates in the free video service and made allegations on T-Mobile a few days back that the cell company is throttling its entire video streams without user consent. In response, T-Mobile spokesperson said that the word used by the internet’s leading video platform is inaccurate and misleading, and instead the situation is better described by the term downgrading. While talking to DSL, the T-Mobile spokesperson said that his company’s feature is not slowing down the YouTube or for that matter any other similar site, but since the videos on these sites are not optimized for mobile devices, they are not streaming as fast as required.
Binge On- highly competitive and innovative
Tom Wheeler, FCC Chairman, had called the Binge On feature from T-Mobile as highly innovative and competitive some time ago. However, Ars Technica reports that the agency has now asked several companies such as Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Atlantic Power Corp (NYSE:AT) apart from T-Mobile to explain their data cap exemption offerings.
The special Binge On feature from T-Mo allows its subscribers to stream videos free from selected services such as HBO, Hulu or Netflix if they opt for a high range data plan. The Sponsored Data Program from AT & T and Data Perks Program also offer similar privilege to its subscribers allowing them to stream content without consuming their regular data allowance. Another service provider, Comcast offers Stream TV service to its XFINITY internet subscribers within the monthly consumer data package.
